ChatGPT Unlocks the Washington Post — But There’s a Bigger Story Behind It
Through this collaboration, people may ask ChatGPT questions to be summarized, quoted from, or linked to The Washington Post content with attribution and hyperlinks. If you are curious about something, ChatGPT will be able to link you to one of the most valued reporting from its newsroom.Media and AI
The Washington Post, owned by Jeff Bezos, has actively adopted AI technology in the past year. The publication has introduced the Ask The Post AI and Climate Answers features, plus AI-powered summaries and audio tools to get the news consumed faster and easier. So, this new partnership with OpenAI fits nicely into that grand strategy.ChatGPT Updates

The intent of both companies is to enhance AI as a means by which journalism can be explored, of course while respecting the original sources. Thus, ChatGPT will not merely display information but will quote, credit, and direct users to the full stories on The Post's website.OpenAI Partnerships
This particular deal is but a snapshot of a far wider picture. OpenAI has been busily establishing partnerships to provide content for more than 20 major publishers, which in total operate over 160 outlets. The aim was to further enrich the information that goes into ChatGPT and the like and to render it more accurate, timely, and useful.AI Copyright Issues
In October, OpenAI also partnered with Hearst Media, the parent company for Esquire, Cosmopolitan, and Elle, as well as the Houston Chronicle and San Francisco Chronicle. This partnership offered OpenAI broad access to content spanning print and digital platforms.AI Revolution in News
A previous alliance was signed with Condé Nast, the media group catering to Vogue, GQ, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and WIRED. This past June, OpenAI signed a multi-year agreement giving it access to more than 100 years of archived articles from Time, a veritable treasure of journalistic content to augment ChatGPT's understanding of history, context, and current events.Behind the Headlines
And that's not all. OpenAI went in partnership with News Corp last May, thereby accessing content of the Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron's, and New York Post, among others. Not even Reddit abstained, granting training inputs to OpenAI from a huge user-generated content base.
However, this smooth sailing has not been across-the-board for OpenAI. Several media organizations have brought forth lawsuits on how their content has been used for training AI models. Last year, the Center for Investigative Reporting, which operates Mother Jones and Reveal, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its prominent backer, Microsoft, for alleged copyright infringement. They weren't alone: The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and New York Daily News joined in suing, too, claiming that their content was used unauthorized.

In particular, the New York Times accused OpenAI and Microsoft of violating intellectual property rights, seeking billions in damages for what it described as “unlawful copying and use” of its work. OpenAI, for its part, pushed back and said it disagreed with the Times' claims. It is becoming increasingly evident that in many media outlets' eyes, partnership may be worth more than a lawsuit against the AI company. The partnership with The Washington Post is an example of OpenAI's willingness to trade visibility and traffic for access to trusted content.
While artificial intelligence further changes the media landscape, look for increasing tech-media collaborations—and probably some more lawsuits.
